What is pay-per-token AI?

Pay-per-token is a usage-based way to pay for AI. Instead of a fixed monthly subscription, you are billed for the exact work each request does — measured in tokens. It is the difference between a monthly gym membership and paying only for the classes you actually attend.

What is a token?

Language models don’t read whole words — they break text into tokens, small chunks of roughly ¾ of a word (about 4 characters). “TokenFlow is fast” is a handful of tokens. Every request has two sides that are counted separately:

  • Input tokens — the prompt you send (your question, plus any context or system instructions).
  • Output tokens — the reply the model generates back to you.

Each model has a published price per million tokens for input and output. Because a typical question is only hundreds or a few thousand tokens, a single request often costs a fraction of a cent — which is why flat 2-decimal pricing hides the real number. TokenFlow shows spend to sub-cent precision so you can see it honestly.

Pay-per-token vs a subscription

A subscription is a flat monthly charge, whether you use the tool every day or not at all. Pay-per-token flips that: you pre-load a wallet and each request draws down only what it costs. If you have a busy week you pay more; if you go quiet, your cost falls to zero. There is no seat to fill, no minimum to hit, and no unused quota to forfeit at month’s end.

How TokenFlow does pay-per-token

  • One prepaid wallet. Top up once and spend across every model and both products — the chat app and the developer API.
  • Transparent margin. You pay the provider’s cost plus a flat 20% margin, and we log both numbers so every charge is auditable.
  • Failed request = free. If a request errors before the model produces any output, you are not billed for it.
  • One key, any model. A single key reaches the Claude and GPT families; send model="auto" and TokenFlow picks a model that fits, so simple prompts aren’t billed at flagship rates.

Pay per token from India

The usual barrier to pay-per-use AI in emerging markets isn’t the price — it’s the payment. Provider billing typically expects a US card and a provider account. TokenFlow removes that: top up in ₹ via UPI or card from as little as ₹50, and we settle with the AI provider in USD for you. You think in rupees; we handle the currency plumbing.

Frequently asked questions

What does pay-per-token mean?

AI models read and write text in units called tokens (roughly ¾ of a word each). Pay-per-token means you are billed for the exact number of tokens each request uses — the input you send and the output you receive — instead of a fixed monthly fee. Small requests cost a fraction of a cent; you never pay for capacity you did not use.

How is pay-per-token different from a subscription?

A subscription charges a flat amount every month whether you use it heavily, lightly, or not at all. Pay-per-token charges only for actual usage from a prepaid balance, so your cost tracks your real activity and drops to zero when you stop.

Is pay-per-token cheaper?

For most people — especially occasional or bursty users — yes, because you are not paying a fixed monthly fee to cover your quiet weeks. Heavy, steady users should compare their expected token volume against any flat plan. TokenFlow logs both the raw provider cost and your charge, so you can always audit exactly what you paid.

Can I pay per token from India with UPI?

Yes. TokenFlow lets you top up a prepaid wallet in rupees via UPI or card and pay per token from there. We handle paying the AI provider in USD behind the scenes, so you never need a foreign card or a provider account.
